What Masculinity Should Be

What Masculinity Should Be

Masculinity is a term that has been used to describe a range of attributes, behaviours, and traits that are traditionally associated with men. However, the concept of masculinity has evolved over time, and there is no single definition of what it should be. In this blog, we will explore what masculinity should be in today's world.

First and foremost, masculinity should be about respecting oneself and others. Men should recognize that everyone, regardless of gender, deserves respect and should be treated with dignity. This means rejecting toxic attitudes and behaviours that are harmful to oneself and others, such as aggression, violence, and dominance.

Masculinity should also be about emotional intelligence and vulnerability. Men should be encouraged to express their emotions and communicate openly with others, rather than bottling up their feelings or using aggression as a way of coping. This requires breaking down the societal stigma that equates vulnerability with weakness, and instead recognizing that vulnerability is a sign of strength.

Furthermore, masculinity should be about promoting equality and dismantling systems of oppression. Men should recognize the ways in which they benefit from patriarchy and work to challenge these systems by actively listening to marginalized voices and advocating for change. This means recognizing the ways in which toxic masculinity harms not only women and marginalized groups, but also men themselves.

Masculinity should also be about being a positive role model for future generations. Men should strive to be kind, compassionate, and respectful but also strong, confident and assertive when needed in their interactions with others, particularly with children. By modelling healthy behaviours and attitudes, men can help shape the next generation of young men and promote a culture of respect.

In conclusion, masculinity should be about respecting oneself and others, promoting emotional intelligence and vulnerability, challenging systems of oppression, being a positive role model, and embracing diversity. By adopting these values, men can help create a more respectful and compassionate world.
